I’ve Found My Druthers!

I don’t know what “druthers” are, but since this site seems to have EVERYTHING I want, they must be here!

Tindie.com is sort of like the Etsy.com or Ebay.com for (unusual) gadget lovers.

Basically, people who build custom gadgets put them up for sale on Tindie.com, and people who want unusual or rare gadgets shop and buy them there…

And there is a LOT of VERY COOL STUFF!

Suppose you were interested in learning to program an Arduino, but you didn’t want to futz with the electronics stuff. Robotic minion Starter Kit has you covered (and is only $55, ready to code!)

Or maybe you just really dig this AWESOME, ready-to-use, meter-based clock that just isn’t available in stores…

Can’t beat that ONE level of Angry Birds?  You can get a robot on Tindie to do it for you!

With this many categories, and that many items in each, I would think my druthers would be in there somewhere, whatever they are!

Proof that Humans Are Capable of Working Magic…

This comic isn’t the kind of thing I usually share, but it struck an awesome cord with me (and is based on a quote by Carl Sagan!), so I wanted to share.

RIP, Carl, for Billions and Billions of years…

Should I use the {xyz} FaceBook App?

I tend to avoid Facebook apps that ask for permissions that don’t seem necessary. This turns out to be a lot of apps!

http://apps.secure.me can help. They catalog and track over 500,000 Facebook apps by their permissions, and by their use (or misuse) of those permissions.

They provide several ways to look up the app in question.

One quick and easy check, and you can decide if an app is safe!

App Advisor by secure me

Something about the app icons marching across the main secure.me page with their “reputations” displayed is very comforting!

Flipboard App Advisor for Facebook by secure me
Flipboard (one of my all-time favorite apps on iOS) has a very good Facebook reputation, despite asking for permissions it doesn’t need (because it doesn’t misuse those permissions).

 Facebook
On any app that you’ve accessed on Facebook, you can remove some of the permissions it asks for. Go to the settings for that app and simply click the “X” next to the permission you don’t want it to have. Now you can access the app without the app accessing you!.

Note: 86Words will do a post in the near future specifically on the topic of changing Facebook app permissions for our users who need the assist!

Make cool stuff out of paper!

Tektonten.com is a site devoted to the craft of… Well… Papercraft.

There are a LOT of models on this site, and it’s updated regularly.

Look through the models, if you like any, download, print, and built your own!

Some people even glue them to plasticard or foamcore for a more durable model!

See below for some examples that can be seen on the site.

Awesome Text-Thingy Posters for Book Lovers!

These posters have the double cool effect of 1) having an awesome, classic book (in it’s entirety!) printed on them, and 2) shaping the words into a scene that represents the book itself!

There are four to choose from with pictures of all four below.

Share and Enjoy!

This is just… Absolutely… Bizarre!

[Link originally posted by Felicia Day on Facebook]

I’m not sure there’s really anything "Geek" or "Tech" themed that I can claim here, but this was just too… Um… Out there not to show you guys!

Apparently, the entire point to this website is to show people that have been photoshopped to have one of their hands really small.

WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT?!?!?

I had to include this one - it’s Zooey! Even her (regular) hand is cute!

Kim Jong is looking a little… Ill! (Sorry, I couldn’t help it - I’ve wanted to use that joke for over a year!)

Ugh. Just… Ugh.
And no, that is not a political comment.

Free Grunge Blotter Desktops done by Moi

A friend who used to do some cool doodle art has recently started again.

He’s probably surprised by how much I’m reacting to it, but it’s really cool stuff!

Anyway, his re-doodling reminded of a grunge wallpaper I used to like, so I decided to create one.

It turned out so well (and was so much fun) that I did another.

They’re free for the taking!

This first one I did was 1920 x 1440 it’s a little flashier, but a bit less believable than the second one.

This is the second one I did. Click on either of them to be taken to DeviantArt where you can download them.

Shadow Era virtual CCG expanding into the physical world!

We’ve covered the computer CCG Shadow Era before - it’s my favorite computerized card game ever!

Wulven Game Studios, the publisher, is now printing real cards for non-computer play!

One cool side effect of this is that the game has been heavily played and they’ve already tweaked the cards for play, balance, etc, so it’ll release with the bugs already fixed!

The cards are shipping in March, so I have to go start practicing!

The cards are the same ones in the computer game, and the release will include all 10 factions.

There will be starter decks for all ten factions, as well as standard, 15-card boosters.

And of course I have to show a screen shot of the computer version! Note that it’s available to play in your browser, or on Mac, PC, or iOS (iPhone / iPod / iPad).

(Note that they aren’t accepting any more pre-orders, the page is now for-info only)

FANTASTIC Wallpaper Site (plus a few favorite wallpaper choices)!

This is kind of a double post.

I found a great wallpaper I wanted to share, but that didn’t seem like much of a post.

Then I decided to cover the site (Wallpaper Abyss) as well.

After that, I figured that I might as well add a few pointers to some of my favorite wallpapers (so far).

Feel free to let us know if you discover any great finds!

The Wallpaper Abyss is an INCREDIBLE resource for wallpaper images with a LOT of other uses!

They provide a TON of ways to search for images…

Even if you just use it as a free art site or an "inspiration" site, they have an incredible array of styles (and provide all images in whatever resolution you want, including custom-as-you-specify)!

This awesome wallpaper is my favorite so far, and is, in fact, the wallpaper I have set on my main Mac monitor.

It was a tough call for first place, but this one ended on my external monitor…

For this final one, I decided on this one from the ABSTRACT>PATTERNS category, though again, it was a tough call!

Nobody can spend all of their time hunting and attacking the good guys. Sometimes, even empire weenies need to take a day off to chill with their fams.
