12 SciFi Weapons Available (or at least DESIGNED) today!

[This is another article suggested by Danny Ashton - Thanks again, Danny!]

This is similar to his last article (the "Deadliest Robots" one). This one is Sci Fi weapons. Unlike the robots, ALL of these are real (that was true of only three of the robots)!

So next time you need to go all Rambo on someone, you can do it in high-tech, sci-fi style with this list!

The XM-25 Airburst Weapons System (Grenade Launcher) - can be programmed to explode at any distance up to 700 meters, or on impact. It can be deployed in seconds and attack targets behind cover!

The Railgun - pretty much the definitive sci-fi weapon! Projectiles fire at a velocity that causes air to literally burn!
( Note that the picture in the article is actually taken from a much less… High end project, here )

The so-called "Rods From God" is a space-born weapon system that simply drops 20 foot long tungsten "darts" from several miles above the earth! The energy released on impact is similar to a nuclear blast sans radiation!

20 Deadliest Robots… THREE OF THEM ARE REAL!

[This article was suggested by Danny Ashton - Thanks as always, Danny; sorry I’m so far behind on my emails!]

This is a pretty straight forward geek post; a list (and short write-up) of the top 20 deadliest robots (based, presumably on the author’s opinion and / or childhood horrors).

Note that, as mentioned in the headline, three of these horrific death dealers are REAL ROBOTS (all three used by the U.S. Military - big shock there, huh?).

Look and be horrified! Terrified? Annoyed? Uh… Amused?

I couldn’t miss an opportunity to post a Matrix robot, could I? Fortunately, no, this is not one of the real ones!

She gets included for being the hottest ‘bot on the list, though surprisingly, this is actually arguable…

This is Max(imillian). I used to collect tarantulas (yes, for real). Max gave my largest with a terrifying 7 inch leg span) her name. That is the impact this robot had on me as a child!

The floor is dancing on my feet!

[ Link suggested by Danny Ashton ]

We haven’t had a posting from our avid supporter, Danny Ashton in some time, not because he hasn’t been offering, just because I haven’t been keeping up with my email!

Well, here’s a link he sent me back in February (Thanks again, Danny!).

The article shows 13 different floors that respond to someone dancing on them - I LOVE these things!

This is my favorite one of the floors shown - I like that your step fades out over time…

This floor seems like it could really help set the mood (though hopefully, the "mood" isn’t vertigo)

This diagram gives a description of how a club in London uses piezo crystals to generate and store electricity by using the movement of the dancers! This electricity is stored in batteries and used to power 60% of the club!

Newspaper Front Pages from EVERYWHERE (well, many places on Earth, at least)

[This site was pointed out by reader Jim Neidert - Thanks, Jim - AWESOME site!]

Nuseum.org is a new museum in DC that contrasts the reporting of events by the news media with the effect the media has on the democratic process and lifestyle.

One of the cooler projects they’re running is a map of newspapers from countries all over the world with links to PDF images of that day’s front page! The images are very cool, but they DO NOT provide archival of these pages, so if you want TODAY’S page, you gotta get it today!

The app zoomed in on Oklahoma - If you hover over one of the dots, the front page of that newspaper displays on the right

This is a close-up of the paper shown in the previous picture - it’s not readable, but it’s only the preview…

If you CLICK on the dot (instead of just hovering), a new browser window opens and loads a downloadable (and savable) PDF of the page. This image is from the very top, left corner of the picture above (and you CAN get CLOSER than this)

To reinforce that point, this is a close-up of some of the text on that page - again, it CAN get closer than this, but I had to fit the image in 450 pixels of width!

The Geek movement continues to grow and spread!

( Article suggested by reader Danny Ashton - Thanks again, Danny! Keep ‘em coming!)

TheToyZone (who we generally avoid because of their ad handling) has published a cool collection of "Geek Rings" - several of which I could see myself wearing (and several of which I could not!).

They’re referred to as Engagement or Wedding rings, but some them certainly don’t fit the category… The first one would be better suited to ending a relationship (or person)!

This is the ring referred to above as being more approprate to end a relationship (or person). Yep, it’s a pistol, and apparently functional.

Crayon Rings. SWEEET! (That’s all I’m sayin’).

Periodic Rings of the Elements? Now these I could totally see myself wearing!

Zombie Porn!

Have you ever had that urge where you want to see sexy, attractive women who have been ripped to shreds, reanimated, and are now posing evocatively for the camera?

If you have, go to ZombiePinups.com and buy one (or 20!) of their pinup calendars (and please, please, please don’t tell us about it!

Geek Art in the Flesh!

[ Link suggested by CurtisP ]

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a user submission, but CurtisP pointed this out to me, and while the tattoos aren’t quite geeky enough for me to commit to one, some of them come pretty close to that range!

Bob Dylan Likes 86Words!!!!

[ Link suggested by CurtisP ]

I’ve posted pointers several times now to various generators on the web, but they’ve all been still pictures. This is the first one I’ve seen that incorporates live video, and on top of that, it’s Bob Dylan! If nothing else, you should go check out the pointer just to see now nicely the messages are integrated into the video - it’s excellent.

I normally like to show three pix or less, but I HAD to show this one!

The three screenshots above are successive pictures from the message that CurtisP sent me to show what the effect was like (the signs say “These internet greeting cards are usually lame…“)

Anybody got a pencil?

[ Link suggested by Progman63 ]

Thanks again to Progman63 for yet another cool discovery!

This site is an example of a “who’da thunk it?” collection - I find these interesting from a stand point of showing that no matter what the topic, somebody out there cares!

For your glued-to-your-seat, heart-stopping, mind-throbbing, white-knuckle viewing pleasure, I present:

Bob Truby’s Brand-Name Pencil Collection!!!

(Note: it’s actually a pretty cool and very well done collection, but Who’da thunk it?)

10 Worst Game-Based Movies

[ Link suggested by Progman63 ]

Progman63 sent another link that I thought you all might enjoy.

This is MSNBC’s recommendation for the five worst video-game movies ever. I’ll pre-answer a couple of obvious questions, then on to the article.

#1 Yes, of course Doom is on the list.

#2 No, I don’t agree with all of the choices - I actually liked Resident Evil: Apocalypse (better than its predecessor, actually).

What do you think they missed? Post your comments and tell the world (or at least the four people who read this site)!
