Periodic Coffee Table of the Elements

“What’s That?” you say.

This has got to be the coolest example of pure geek furniture ever!

This coffee table, besides being geeky, stylish, and informative, also contains an actual sample of each of the elements in the chart (and actually shows them in said chart).

The table is a little on the expensive side, at well over $8,000 at current exchange rates, but hey, you’ll always be able to quickly remember the periodic symbol for Selenium!

“Geek” Rocks!

Image
Classy furniture, geek-chic style, and handy reference! What more could you ask for?

Requiem: Bloodymare - First Full-Fledged Online Horror Game!

I’ve been waiting to review this game for a while! I found it after between it’s open beta and going live, so I had to wait… And wait.

This was very frustrating because it was obvious that there were monsters that needed major killin’.

Requiem is nicely done, easy to play, and the world is huge. It can be played solo or as part of a group.

Once again, my previous favorite MMO has been one-upped!

Go whoop up on some evil!

This is the “Loading” progress bar, the stitches break open until the load is complete!

Here’s one of my early combats against a “Taurustoad”

Yes, we’re living in the future…

I’m sure you’ve heard it said before, but I’m finding myself saying it more and more, we’re living in the future.

This had to happen eventually, but it’s cool that it’s sooner rather than later! Now business owners aren’t limited to the old animated video screens (they’re sooo 2007), they can animate the “skin” of their building!

This is Flare, welcome to the future (the video after the jump is a must-see!).

This building surface is currently showing some “spikes” shooting up from the bottom to the top

Each surface blocks is controlled separately and animated with an easy-to-use computer program

A Cat’s Eye View of the World

KittyCam!

Mr. Lee is a cat who was the subject of an experiment. He wore a camera around all day that would take pictures of whatever he was looking at.

The Mr-Lee-CatCam webpage shows the results; most is pretty much what you would expect (peeking through high grass, hiding under a car, etc), but a couple of pictures are unexpected!

Mr. Lee went on several such missions, but if that’s not enough, the User Gallery has missions of other people’s cats!

Image
Keepin’ an eye on things, kitty style!

Image
Mr. Lee is apparently chillin’ with his home cats

Image
Now THIS is pretty cool!

Um… What?

Good Free Alternative to Nero

These days it’s common to buy a laptop that has a CD/DVD burner but gives you know way to actually use it to burn CDs/DVDs!

Well, the good news is that there are a lot of good alternatives using free software. Our current favorite is CDBurnerXP (don’t worry, it runs fine on Vista too!)

CDBurnerXP is well done, polished, and easy to use, and pretty effective.

Once again, free software that’s solidly competitive with the commercial stuff!

Ya gotta love that!

Image
CDBurnerXp is a pretty polished product, right down to the About box!

Image
Like Nero, CDBurnerXP gives you the ability to use your burner in a lot of different ways

Image
The simple drag-n-drop interface makes it easy for anyone who knows how to use Windows

Image
Several of the specialized options provide matching tools (like this simple Audio player when you’re creating music CDs)

Free Stock Texture Photos!

We’ve covered free image and photo sites in the past, but this is the first one specializing in texture photos. They’re free to download and use, and they’re large and high quality.

Next time you need a texture for your 3d work, or for improved desktop Fung Shui, take a look at TextureKing!

(Note that, even when you click the images here to enlarge, they’re still significantly smaller than the ones provided on the site)

Image
This is one of the textures from the “Glass” category

Image
Here’s one I really like from the “Plaster” category

And this bizarre (but cool) one came from the “Misc” category

Seven Player Tetris anyone?

Tetris has been around for a long time (from a computer age perspective), and there have been about a billion variants, many of the pretty creative.

Have you ever got to play against six other players at the same time?

Now you can! Check out the pics (or just go play!)

Image
You get the big screen, all of your opponents are the little ones (and they’re updated live)

Image
I’m obviously the best Tetris player ever (or in this case, “Blockles” player)

Image
There’s even an “invite” option and a chat box (cuz, you know, you have a lot of time to type while you’re playing)

Always Ready Calculator(s) that don’t even require a download!

Everyone needs a calculator sometimes, and just about everybody has resorted to the Windows (or equivalent) calculator for some quick calculations, right?

Well, for most people, that’s a pain in the tucas because we need it so infrequently. Well, the web now offers a better way.

ECalc.com provides both a basic and a scientific calculator, very nicely done, and very accessible.

Next time you need to do run some quick (or long) numbers, hit ECalc. It’s just better!

Image
You can either go to www.ecalc.com and select Basic or Scientific, or you can go directly to the one of your choice

Image
To use the (many) converson options, just drag the blue and green bars to your choices. The color you’re dragging is updated dynamically!

Image
Here I calculated 6×9 on the left, moved the value to the area on the right and found that, contrary to a certain “caveman” using Scrabble tiles, 6×9 does not, in fact, equal 42 in Decimal, octal, hex, or (of course) binary. (Note: a cool feature in the binary section - click on any of the 32 bits to flip it, the other conversions change accordingly!)

Dark Knight is making Night a little less Dark!

In one of the coolest advertizing stunts of all time, the release of the upcoming Batman movie, Dark Knight, the films advertizing group is shining a real-life Bat Signal on the Woolworth building in New York City.

The thanks for this notice goes to the Gothamist, and you should go read the article, it’s very short and very funny.

Here’s a good view of the sight - it looks better on the full image so click to enlarge

Here’s a shot of the signal all the way from Brooklyn Heights! (Thanks for this one goes to BrooklynHeightsBlog)
