Alganon: A different kind of review (for 86Words)

Alganon is another Free to Play, Micro Transaction MMO.

You should totally play it if:

* Your time is worthless
* You’ve never played a fantasy game (and have no comparison)
* You adore cliches in story and language

OR

You’re a schmutz.

For everyone else, thank me for taking one on the chin for you - I’ve saved you hours of download time!

At least the graphics are pretty.

Here’s a view of some of the interface elements. They work, but look at the pretty colors!

I don’t know what this is - I didn’t get this far due to my low tolerance for horribleness.

This is actually from World of Warcraft. I included it in case you’ve ALREADY tried Alganon and were in danger of having a traumatic flashback episode.

Google Body Browser = AWESOME!!!

The Google Labs developers have created ANOTHER amazing web app - this one intended for anyone interested in human anatomy (in the medical sense).

I suggest Chrome for the smoothest experience.

The app has two modes; one simple, and the other more advanced for detailed viewing. You can also use the search box, of course.

The model rotates and pans in full 3D.

A definite must for medical students!

Here’s the full view, zoomed almost all the way out.

A closer view using the "simple" slider to show details from the skeletal level down to the neurological systems.

This is an example of the more advanced option, not that I have everything off except "skeletal" and (partially) circulatory systems.

Now come on, tell me this wouldn’t crack you up too!

Discover (and make) an Afghan Box Camera

The Afghan Box Camera article on NPR is a little outside my normal posts, but it seemed like a lot of you might dig it.

The cameras are sort of like manual Polaroids with a built-in (manual) dark-room. There’s even a video included that shows you how to build one!

Plus, the final image has a cool, (ancient) retro look!

Apparently these things are actually used for street-photography in Afghanistan.

The final result looks almost like a Deguerrotype or Tintype photo (this is not a great example, but I wanted to show the final from the first picture).

Along the way of getting to the final image, you  have to take a second picture of the original negative.

This is an example of a shot that was taken with a bit more care - I actually prefer the more retro look.

An example of some of the common kinds of shots done with the camera…
